Thesis: 'Reflexive Representation: Party Activists as the Link between Voters and Political Elites'

I study political representation through direct contact between parties and citizens. Grassroots party activists are often assumed to link voters and political elites, but we know little about whether they do. I focus on face-to-face interactions on the doorstep and ask how these conversations affect the attitudes and behaviour of both voters and activists. Do these interactions increase voters' external political efficacy, and do activists channel what they hear back into the party? To answer these questions, I run field experiments in cooperation with political parties and complement them with observational causal inference.
