Anthony read Chemical Engineering at Cambridge and became interested in statistics when working for Shell. A year's postgraduate study at Imperial College was followed by two years in the American chemical industry. He returned to the UK for a PhD at Imperial College, supervised by David Cox. Anthony stayed at Imperial eventually becoming a professor. In 1966 he moved to the LSE, again as a professor of statistics and retired in 2002.
