A key function of the Department of Methodology is to provide training for PhD and MSc students in the design of social research and in qualitative and quantitative analysis. Our courses are open to all LSE students taking MSc or PhD programmes. This means that research students are welcome to attend any of the department's courses, regardless of which department they are based in.

Information regarding Controlled Access Courses
Certain courses we offer are “controlled access” and are listed below. They have limited places, so you might not receive a place, and it is highly advised to consider alternative options in advance.
Please refrain from emailing the course conveners with personal expressions of interest, as these do not impact the selection process.

Priority will be given to ID students who have this course as a semi-core, followed by MY degrees and ID joint-degree students, then students from elsewhere in the School.
You only need to submit the course choice on LfY. There is no need to include a written statement.
The deadline for the first-round application via LfY will be 12noon on Friday 25 September 2026. Applications will be reviewed after this deadline, with the aim of allocating places by Monday 28 September 2026.
Any places remaining after the first-round allocation will be allocated on first-come-first-serve basis until either the course is full or course selection closes.
