Qualitative research

DiSTO has utilised qualitative methods as a tool to adapt surveys to the local context, enabling changes and refinements. The combination of methods has allowed for more accurate and relevant survey results. Consequently, qualitative research methods have been used in almost all DiSTO research projects.

DiSTO has also utilised qualitative research as a 'classical' research technique, using the rich data to identify people's motivations, views and habits when considering internet access.

Key examples include focus groups which have captured how vulnerable young people in Britain experience the digital world; interviews which have identified motivational factors and network effects behind using the internet and narrative analysis which identified key media narratives during the Covid-19 pandemic.
