Berfin has completed her PhD at the University of Essex in the Department of Sociology in 2013. Her PhD explored the representation of nationalism and masculinity in a popular long running Turkish TV series and its reception by its audiences in the context of their gendered experiences.

Her later research on Alevi media and transnationalism has been awarded Newton International Fellowship by the British Academy (2016-2019). Department of Media Communications at LSE has hosted this research. Mentored by Myria Georgiou, the research explores Alevi media within the transnational context and building a public sphere engaging Alevi audience from different local and national contexts.

Before joining UAL, Berfin has worked at different capacities at Anadolu University, Hacettepe University, University of Essex, Regent’s University London and LSE.

She has published various articles on the Turkish media in European Journal of Communication, European Journal of Cultural Studies International Journal of Communication and Media, Culture & Society. She is the author of the book The Paramilitary Hero in Turkish Television. Currently she is working on her book titled Transversal Citizenship in the Digital Era based on the findings of her research on Alevi media.
