Sir Paul Marshall renews support for the Marshall Institute at LSE with £30 million pledge

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has announced renewed support from Sir Paul Marshall for the Marshall Institute. The £30 million pledge will support the next phase of the Institute’s development, strengthening its position as a leading global centre for research, teaching and engagement in philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and social innovation.
Founded in 2016 through the shared vision of Sir Paul Marshall and LSE, the Institute was established to improve the impact and effectiveness of private contributions to public benefit. A decade on, it has educated more than 1000 LSE students across a portfolio of degree and lifelong learning programmes, brought together researchers and leaders from philanthropy, government, business and civil society, and established 100x Impact, LSE’s university-based impact accelerator. Through 100x, 10 million in capital has been deployed to high-potential social ventures, which have gone on to raise 25 times that amount, while reaching over 500 million lives.
Sir Paul’s latest generous pledge will underpin the next phase of the Institute's work, expanding its capacity to generate world-leading research, educate future leaders, foster collaboration between academics and practitioners, and advance understanding of how philanthropy and social entrepreneurship can contribute to public benefit.
Professor Larry Kramer, President and Vice Chancellor of LSE, said: “We are immensely grateful to Sir Paul Marshall for his continued generous support, which recognises the importance of our work to understand how philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and social innovation can contribute to public benefit. The Marshall Institute bridges research and practice, a connection this gift will strengthen by enabling us to develop knowledge, educate future leaders and support innovation that delivers meaningful social impact.”
Sir Paul Marshall said: ““It is an honour to be able to collaborate with the LSE in this way. It is a great partnership and it is especially rewarding to see the flow of future leaders and social entrepreneurs who are emerging from the Institute”
Professor Stephan Chambers OBE, Director of the Marshall Institute said: “The Marshall Institute’s courses put measurable, sustainable, social impact at their heart and encourage students to think boldly about how innovation, analytical rigour, energy and purpose can reshape sectors and institutions. Thousands of students have benefited from Paul Marshall’s vision and the trust he has placed in the LSE. His commitment to head and heart, market and morals, purpose and passion allows students and ventures to flourish in ways that would otherwise be impossible.
The Institute is based in the Marshall Building, which was made possible through Sir Paul Marshall's initial support for LSE. The building opened in 2022 and houses the Marshall Institute alongside a range of academic departments and teaching spaces.
