Leading academics from Fudan University, Shanghai, presented recent research on Chinese Health Policy reform to a packed hall at the LSE on Monday 21st March.
Professor Chen Wen, Dean of the School of Public Health, gave an overview of existing health policies, looking at challenges to the health and forces driving reform such as cost, access and inequity. Professor Yan then explored China’s health insurance provision, looking at the development of the existing schemes and policy recommendations for the future.
Finally, Professor Yingyao Chen, Associate Dean, looked at hospital reform, exploring autonomy within the public sector and the role of private hospitals as an alternative. The presentations given are available for download below.
The event was part of a broader collaboration between LSE and Fudan, who recently signed an MOU to work together on public policy research.
The delegation from Fudan spent two days meeting with LSE Health Faculty members to identify areas of collaboration and a research agenda to take forward. A wealth of potential research topics and academic fellowship opportunities were identified and will be developed in the year ahead.

Chinese Health Policy Reforms: An Overview
Professor Chen Wen is Professor of Health Economics, and Dean of the School of Public Health at Fudan University in Shanghai. He has previously served as a consultant for World Health Organization and World Bank and frequently advises national and municipal governments on Chinese healthcare system development, national and provincial health insurance, pharmacoeconomics, pharmaceutical price regulation, and health financing.

Professor Yan Fei is Professor and Vice-Chairperson of the Department of Health Statistics and Social Medicine at the School of Public Health Fudan University.
The Dilemma of Hospital Reform in China: Public or Private
Professor Chen Yingyao is Professor of health services at the School of Public Health, Fudan University. He acts as the Associate Dean of Fudan School of Public Health, responsible for international collaborations and is deputy director of the National Key Lab of Health Technology Assessment, and Fudan Global Health Institute.
