The Brian Abel-Smith Prize Winners

Brian Abel-Smith and Walter Holland Prizes are awarded each year to recognise chosen students' outstanding overall performance and dissertations

The Brian Abel-Smith Memorial Fund, hosted by the LSE’s Department of Health Policy, funds a series of prizes for MSc students in honour of Brian Abel-Smith.

As well as holding a Professorship in Social Administration at the LSE from 1965-1991, Brian Abel-Smith spent his life trying to improve that of others in the way he knew best - through academic excellence.

Brian Abel-Smith Prizes

Prizes are awarded each year to LSE students on our MSc International Health Policy / International Health Policy (Health Economics) and MSc Health Policy Planning and Financing programmes, as well as to students on Executive programmes MSc Health Economics, Policy and Management, MSc Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences and Executive MSc in Evaluation of Health Care Interventions and Outcomes.

The Brian Abel-Smith Prize for Best Dissertation is awarded to the student with the highest dissertation mark in their year group from the following programmes:

  • MSc International Health Policy
  • MSc International Health Policy (Health Economics)
  • MSc Health Policy Planning and Financing
  • Executive MSc Evaluation of Health Care Interventions and Outcomes, in collaboration with NICE (before 23/24)
  • Executive MSc Health Economics, Policy and Management

The Brian Abel-Smith Prize for Best Overall Performance is awarded to the student with the highest overall aggregate score in their year group from the folllowing programmes:

  • MSc International Health Policy
  • MSc International Health Policy (Health Economics)
  • MSc Health Policy Planning and Financing
  • Executive MSc Evaluation of Health Care Interventions and Outcomes, in collaboration with NICE (before 23/24)
  • Executive MSc Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences
  • Executive MSc Health Economics, Policy and Management

Walter Holland Prizes

The Fund also supports two prizes in memory of former colleague and public health pioneer Walter Holland. The Walter Holland Prize for Best Dissertation and the Walter Holland Prize for Best Overall Performance are awarded annually to MSc Global Health Policy students.

The Brian Abel-Smith Memorial Fund programme is a charitable objective of the LSE, which is itself an educational charity. This status enables UK donors to increase the value of their gifts by making a covenant to the Fund, or by giving a single sum under Gift Aid.

In the USA donations may be made through the Second Centennial Fund, Inc (a Section 501 (c)(3) organisation), with a recommendation as to their application.
