Dr Jan Zglinski co-authors major report on FIFA, Saudi Aramco and fossil fuel advertising
Dr Jan Zglinski is a co-author of a major new report examining the climate implications of FIFA's commercial partnership with Saudi Aramco.
"Football Ignites the World", published today by FairSquare, Fossil Free Football, Reclame Fossielvrij, and Badvertising, argues that FIFA's decision to make Aramco — Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil and gas company — its biggest sponsor represents one of the most dangerous examples of fossil fuel advertising the world has seen. The deal will place Aramco's branding before billions of viewers when the FIFA men's World Cup begins on 11 June 2026.
Drawing on scientific analysis and detailed legal research, the report sets out how the European Union could act to ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship in sport, and identifies the legal tools available to make this a reality.
