'Proportional representation is breaking Dutch democracy'

In a new article in 'Social Europe', ‘Proportional Representation Is Breaking Dutch Democracy’, Professor Tarun Khaitan and co-author Mike Winterwerp argue that the Netherlands’ system of proportional representation is highly problematic, not only producing chronic fragmentation but also rewarding anti-system extremist parties. The authors argue that an Australian-style ranked choice system could bring governmental stability while shifting the political rewards structure towards moderation rather than polarisation.
