Ross Cranston-2017

Together with Dr Karen Brewer, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association, Professor Ross Cranston recently led a delegation of judges to The Gambia to work with the Gambian judiciary on changes in their civil and criminal practice.  Justice Awa Bah of the Gambian Supreme Court facilitated the visit. Professor Cranston conducted a discussion with members of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court on issues of over-fishing, deforestation, and mining approvals, drawing on case-law from around the Commonwealth. He then participated in a two day session on reforms to the Gambian Code of Civil Procedure. There were then two days working with the judges and magistrates on vulnerable witnesses, sentencing guidelines and bail in criminal matters led by HHJ Picton, HHJ Cullum and DJMC Shamin Quresh. The visit was part of ongoing assistance funded by the UK High Commission in The Gambia.
