To coincide with the visit of Professor Hannah Buxbaum to the LSE, the Department of Law is delighted to host a Roundtable on Extraterritoriality, on Thursday 6 February 2020, from 3pm. We are hoping for a productive conversation between LSE colleagues from different areas of law and invited experts on extraterritorial regulation and conflict of laws, including professor Hannah Buxbaum (Indiana), professor Etienne Pataut (Paris I), and professor Thibaut Fleury Graff (Rennes).

The aim  is to approach the topic of extraterritorial regulation from the ground up, starting with case studies from a range of substantive domains, including: environmental regulation, data-protection, financial regulation, and competition law. These case studies will lay the framework for a broader discussion on what remain some difficult and highly topical questions: What sorts of territorial considerations play a role in regulation in these different areas? How is ‘territory’ constructed in different fields, and under what sorts of conditions do questions of territorial scope or ‘reach’ emerge, and become more relevant, contested and difficult? Can we draw parallels and analogies between the issues arising in these different areas, or is ‘extraterritoriality’ better approached locally, and in a differentiated fashion?

Department of Law faculty will be giving presentations on their research across the areas of environmental regulation, competition law, financial regulation, and data-protection law, followed by a general discussion. All LSE colleagues and PhD students are very welcome to attend and participate. Seating in the Moot Court Room is limited and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Please email Dr Jan Kleinheisterkamp or Dr Jacco Bomhoff for more information.

There will be presentations by: Professor Veerle Heyvaert (LSE, environmental law); Dr Niamh Dunne (LSE, competition law); Dr Jo Braithwaite (LSE, financial regulation); Professor Niamh Moloney (LSE, financial regulation); Dr Orla Lynskey (LSE, data-protection); Dr Ioanna Toukochoriti (LSE visiting fellow, data-protection).

From time to time there are changes to event details so we strongly recommend that if you plan to attend this event you check back on this listing on the day of the event.
