About me

Allan Hackshaw has worked in medical research since 1992. He has substantial experience in a variety of disease areas, including cancer treatments and diagnosis, cardiovascular disease, genetic and structural disorders during pregnancy, and tobacco and health.

He has worked in several cancer types (notably lung, thyroid, and gynaecological) and all types of interventions (systematic therapies including targeted and immunotherapies, advanced cell/gene theapies, radiotherapy, surgery, and combinations of them).

His special interest is in adult and prenatal screening. He is Vice-Chair of the UK National Screening Committee Adult Reference Group, and co-editor of the Journal of Medical Screening. Several of the large scale studies for which he has been a key investigator has changed national and international clinical or public health screening practice.

He has been a key co-investigator on successful grant funding applications (>£150 million in total), published more than 250 journal articles and book chapters, and sole or first author of five textbooks including ‘A Concise Guide to Clinical Trials’ 2024, ‘A Concise Guide to Observational Studies’ 2015 and ‘How to write a grant application’ 2011, all from Wiley/Blackwells, and ‘Fast Facts: clinical trials in oncology‘ from Karger 2020. He has comprehensive knowledge of conducting multicentre clinical studies (small and large scale), including regulations and other decision-making processes.
