Spencer Dale was Chief Economist both at the Bank of England (including during the Financial Crisis) and at bp PLC (leading on their energy transition strategy). He has been a trusted advisor and counsellor for a range of individuals and institutions, including the Federal Reserve Board. This combination of public- and private-sector experience at the highest level makes Spencer uniquely well qualified to help build the work being undertaken by GSoS and colleagues across LSE on energy economics, the green transition and related matters.

Anna Valero is Professor in Practice and Growth Programme Director at the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance, and Associate of the Grantham Research Institute. Her research focuses on the drivers of productivity and innovation in firms and regions, and she has a particular interest in informing policies for environmentally sustainable and inclusive growth. Anna has held a number of advisory roles for the UK government and policy institutions. She is currently serving as Industrial Strategy Adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, having served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers in 2024-25. At GSoS, she will be helping to build work on industrial strategy and innovation.

Jonathan Pershing, Inaugural Dean and Professor in Practice at GSoS, said: "It is truly an honour to have these two distinguished figures joining us in the new Global School of Sustainability. They both have impressive track records in applying research and analysis to concrete problems in real world practice, and engaging with key stakeholders on policy delivery. We anticipate them making a tremendous contribution to our work."

Spencer Dale said: "I am super excited to be joining the Global School of Sustainability at LSE. The next 5-10 years will be vital in shifting views and understanding about the importance of moving to a more sustainable future, and GSoS is ideally placed to play a central role in that transition."

Anna Valero said: "I am delighted to be joining GSoS in this new role. Effective industrial strategies are at the heart of improving productivity growth, generating good jobs and achieving sustainability objectives. I look forward to building new collaborative research to inform policy, building on a significant body of work on sustainable growth at the CEP."
