Nature Economics Workshop

We are pleased to invite submissions to the inaugural LSE Nature Economics Workshop (NEW), which will take place in person at the London School of Economics and Political Science on 7-8 January 2027. The workshop is organised jointly by the Department of Geography and Environment and the Global School of Sustainability at LSE.

We invite submissions focused on the economics of ecosystem restoration, nature-based solutions, deforestation, conservation policy, and biodiversity. The workshop asks how ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and land-use policies shape economic development; whether they improve ecosystem services, carbon storage, and habitat quality; how they affect agricultural production, labour allocation, land markets, and rural welfare; and how unintended effects such as leakage, displacement, and changes in local incentives alter their overall impacts. We particularly welcome research using causal evidence, policy design, and impact evaluation approaches to reveal how restoration and conservation policies affect both people and ecosystems.

The programme will feature full paper presentations, an ‘egg-timer’ session for early career researchers, and a keynote lecture by Seema Jayachandran (Princeton University). We will also host a panel discussion focused on ecosystem restoration, land use change and biodiversity between Sir Andrew Steer (LSE), Seema Jayachandran (Princeton University) and Ben Groom (University of Exeter), creating a useful bridge between international policy, biodiversity/restoration science, and economic research.

There is no registration fee for invited participants. Accommodation will be arranged and covered for all speakers, and meals, snacks, and drinks will be provided throughout the two days. Participants are responsible for arranging and funding their own travel.

Full papers must be submitted by 30 October 2026 (by midnight London time). Abstracts alone will not be considered. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by November 13 2026.
