Too big to ignore: Carbon Performance and the $2 trillion chemical sector

Companies in the chemicals sector are major greenhouse gas emitters, and yet they also play a critical role in the low-carbon transition by providing technologies and materials needed to decarbonise other parts of the economy. The sector is one of the world’s largest manufacturing industries by market capitalisation and the largest industrial consumer of fossil fuels. Therefore, the chemicals sector is of considerable importance to both investors and global efforts to achieve climate goals.

This webinar, organised by the TPI Global Climate Transition Centre (TPI Centre) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), will first present the Centre’s novel approach to assessing the sector (see the Carbon Performance assessment of chemical producers: methodology note) and key findings from recent assessments of 23 of the largest companies in the chemicals sector. Following the presentation, the panel discussion will explore barriers and enabling factors such as financing and policy frameworks for the low-carbon transition in chemicals. The panel will bring together perspectives from academic, industry and investor representatives.

The event will start with a presentation of the Centre's Carbon Performance methodology for the chemical sector and recent assessment results. It will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with investor, industry and academic representatives, before opening the floor to a Q&A session from the online audience. Established in June 2022, the TPI Global Climate Transition Centre (TPI Centre) is an academic research centre at LSE dedicated to producing independent and forward-looking research and data on the progress of corporate and sovereign entities in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Its assessments use publicly disclosed information and its research outputs and datasets are publicly accessible.
