'No future' for transatlantic relations? Reflections in advance of the US mid-term elections

The transatlantic partnership provided security for Europe for 80 years. Yet today, the United States regards Europe as only its fourth security priority. Economically strained by Trump’s tariffs and challenged by renewed claims on Greenland, European trust in the United States has fallen to an all-time low. With crucial midterm elections on the horizon, an important question emerges: what might a renewed partnership of equals look like?

Meet our speaker and chair

Klaus Welle is Visiting Professor in Practice at the LSE European Institute. He was previously Secretary General of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2022. His previous roles in Brussels include serving as chief of staff to the President of the European Parliament, as Director General for EU Internal Policies in the Parliament's administration, and as Secretary General successively of the European People's Party (EPP) transnational political party and of the EPP political group in the European Parliament.

Chris Anderson is the Ralf Dahrendorf Professor of European Politics and Society. A student of political behaviour, Anderson’s research has centred on the micro-foundations of markets and democracy. Past research projects have investigated the popularity of governments, the dynamics of public opinion about European integration, and people’s satisfaction with democracy. In other streams of research, he has investigated the connection between welfare states and citizen behaviour and the political attitudes and behaviours of immigrants in Europe.
