(*A  new external applicant is someone who has not previously worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department).

If you are an existing GTA applying for a renewal or a PhD Economics student teaching for the first time in the Department, completing the reference form is not required.

For further information about the courses that are taught, please see the LSE Course Guides. Please note, these are the course guides for 2024/25. These will be updated for 2025/26 in Summer 2025.

  • It is essential that you have good spoken English to work effectively as a GTA. If English is your second language, your spoken English will be assessed at the training workshop. If necessary, you will be asked to attend English for Teaching Purposes support classes at the School’s Language Centre.

  • List the courses, up to a maximum of FOUR, which match your academic strengths and which you think you could teach well. List them in order of preference. If your application is successful, we will try to assign you to your first course choice. However, if your first course choice is over-subscribed, you should be prepared to teach on your second, third or fourth course choice. You should be prepared to be flexible and to fit in according to the overall needs of the Department. Therefore, please only select courses you would be willing to teach.
  • EC300 level courses are Undergraduate teaching. EC400/PP400 level courses are Masters level teaching.(EC441, EC442 are MRes level teaching.

  • Since the number of students enrolling on courses varies, the number of classes required for each course also varies. Therefore, hours are based on a minimum of 1 hour (1 class) per week for smaller courses, and up to a maximum of 5 hours (5 classes) per week for larger courses, for 20 teaching weeks. For larger courses (particularly 1st and 2nd year courses) a minimum weekly commitment of 2 - 3 hours per week is normally required. Please indicate the number of classes you would like to teach.
  • IMPORTANT: ALL GTAs are expected to make a commitment to teach for the full academic year, i.e. September to June. Only apply if you are sure you can make such a commitment. You should not undertake other work, e.g. as a Research Assistant, if this will prevent you from completing your GTA duties. It is your responsibility to be aware of any visa restrictions on the number of hours per week you are permitted to work.
