Mapping and comparing fundamental rights and freedoms currently protected in Muslim majority societies

The International Norms Project was co-ordinated by LSE in partnership with the Folke Bernadotte Academy, and other partners including the University of Uppsala. The project was funded through the European Union Afghanistan Peace Support Mechanism with support from the European Union and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.

The project will help examine how rights were negotiated in political transitions in Muslim majority societies.

The aim was to map and compare fundamental rights and freedoms currently protected under the Afghan Constitution with Islamic teaching, traditions, and texts in Afghanistan and elsewhere, with a view to identifying possible points of convergence in relation to the promotion and protection of those rights in Afghanistan going forward. This included examining how such rights were negotiated in other political transitions in Muslim majority societies elsewhere.
