FLCA in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter

Statement on the death of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor

The Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa (FLCA) acknowledges the international outrage that has stemmed from the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others. We support the efforts of those working to ease ongoing tensions within the United States of America and those working to combat the issues of racism, police brutality and institutional oppression throughout society. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and wider African American communities collectively grieving these recent tragic incidents. We sincerely urge everyone protesting for a better world to be supportive of one another, and do all that is possible to stay safe in these difficult times.

The FLCA’s work is primarily focused on placing Africa at the heart of debates on global issues, and the FLCA views advocating for the protection, safety and well-being of African Americans and all of those within the African diaspora as fundamentally in line with our mission.

With millions of Africans in the diaspora calling the United States their home, we call upon everyone who engages with our work to support those who struggle for justice and equality in order to achieve lasting peace in our world.

#BlackLivesMatter

In solidarity.
