Gifts and sponsorship opportunities at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa

The Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa and LSE are privileged to receive the generous support of alumni and friends whose values align with our own, and who help progress our work through philanthropy.

I cannot think of any comparable Centre for the study of Africa outside of the continent that has made such a huge impact within such a limited time

Wale Adebanwi, University of Oxford

Every gift you make, no matter the size, will further our mission to place Africa at the centre of global debates, and support our programmes that strengthen LSE’s commitment to the African continent.

Our current funding priorities include:

1. Supporting African students at LSE

The FLIA aims to provide consistent support to African students attending LSE through the Programme for African Leadership and the Africa Engagement Programme focusing on leadership development, strengthening a network of African LSE students, and supporting their transition to successful careers.

2. Post-graduate scholarships

Between tuition, travel, visa fees and London living expenses, the cost of full-time study can present an enormous barrier for prospective African students. FLIA aims to offer scholarships to African students at LSE every year.

3. African Research Fellowships

FLIA’s African Research Fellowship programme invites junior researchers to work at the Institute each year on issues connected to the African continent under the mentorship of our Strategic Director and Institute Director. Gifts from supporters are crucial to ensuring we can continue to offer this opportunity now and in the future.

4. Activities and engagement with alumni, friends and partners in Africa

Each year, the number of LSE African alumni grows larger. Through our Africa Engagement Programme, we hope to engage more closely with these alumni to connect them to networking opportunities and career support by hosting regional events and facilitating partnerships with African public and private institutions.

5. Visiting African Academics

The Institute’s strategy since its inception has been to bring the African perspective to LSE to enrich teaching, research, debates and mentorship. With philanthropic support, we hope to recruit and support visiting African professors at LSE to increase the representation of African academic and research talent at the School.

Event and Programme Partnerships:

The PfAL Forum

The PfAL Forum will bring together PfAL alumni to discuss the future of the network along with various issues facing the continent. If you would like to collaborate with us in putting on this event, or you would like to sponsor a portion of the event, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Africa Summit

The Africa Summit is the largest annual student-led event on Africa in Europe. Every year it brings together experts from academic, policy, and the private sector to offer African perspectives to global issues. If you would like to sponor the Summit, participate on a panel, or be a part of the career fair, please connect us to discuss the opportunity.

The Career Transitions Lab

Are you an expert in your field or a particular industry? Do you have extensive experience working on the continent? Do you want to provide mentorship and guidance to students looking to return to Africa? If so, please enquire about participating in our Career Transitions Lab aimed at Master's students.

Discuss your philanthropy

We can help to match your generous support with longer-term priorities that further the Institute’s strategic priorities. We can work with you to build on your relationship with LSE and discuss how your philanthropic and personal interests can be fulfilled through giving opportunities that are meaningful to you.
