Scholarships


During my year at LSE, I gained a deeper understanding of the central role of politics and the complexities of bringing about change and development.

LSE and external organisations offer a number of scholarships for African students to study at LSE. The value of support ranges in value from 10 per cent of the tuition fee to a full fees and maintenance award.

Approximately 19 per cent of taught masters holders are successful in obtaining some form of financial support from the School.

Below you will find a list of some of the scholarships available to African nationals.

Funding from LSE for undergraduate programmes

Undergraduate Support Scheme

The Undergraduate Support Scheme provides funding for overseas students on the basis of financial need.

Eligibility
The LSE Undergraduate Support Scheme (USS) is designed to help overseas students who do not have the necessary funds to meet all their costs of study.

Funding from LSE for master's and diploma programmes

Wellcome Award MSc in Health and International Development

LSE is pleased to announce the Wellcome Award MSc in Health and International Development scholarships. They commenced in 2019 and open for applications every September.

For applicants from:
All countries worldwide. African nationals are encouraged.

Eligibility:

This scholarship is open to all applicants to the MSc in Health and International Development programme.

Antoine Faure-Grimaud MSc Scholarships

LSE is pleased to offer the Antoine Faure-Grimaud MSc Scholarships in the Department of Finance.

For applicants from:
All countries in Africa

Eligibility
The scholarships will be offered to an applicant studying either MSc Finance (Full Time) or MSc Finance and Private Equity.

Deadline
The Department will select candidates on a rolling basis and will consider academic merit and financial need.

Atlantic Fellowship for Social and Economic Equity

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity Programme (AFSEE) at the International Inequalities Institute is a fantastic new opportunity for experienced academics and senior practitioners to dig deeper into the causes of inequalities.

Via two tracks, Residential and Non-Residential, the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme combines rigorous academic coursework with practical approaches to fostering social change.

Carsten Stoehr Scholarship in Government 

LSE is pleased to offer the Carsten Stoehr MSc Scholarship in Government.

For applicants from:
All countries in Africa

Eligibility
This scholarship is for a student to pursue any full-time MSc programme within the Government Department.

It will be awarded on the basis of both financial need and academic merit.

Deadline

Claudio Ciborra Scholarship Fund 

This scholarship is support MSc study in the Department of Management 

For applicants from:
All countries in Africa

Eligibility
This scholarship is available to any applicant to the MSc Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation programme.

Selection will be made within the department based on both academic merit and financial need. There is one award of approximately £5,000.

Firoz and Najma Foundation Scholarship

The mission of the Firoz and Najma Foundation is to provide educational support for students from underdeveloped countries, to support the arts in selected communities, and to initiate ground level education and health programmes aimed at assisting young women.

Firoz Lalji, an alumnus of LSE, said: 'LSE has had a great and positive impact on my life. This is my way of connecting my alma mater to Uganda and to see a steady flow of future leaders that in turn will benefit not only the deserving students, but also Uganda's development'.

Eligibility
The Foundation has established an endowed scholarship for students from Belize or Uganda. If no suitable student from Belize or Uganda is found, students from other countries may be considered.

The scholarships has a value of £8,000.

Graduate Support Scheme

LSE makes available £3.2 million annually in the form of awards from the Graduate Support Scheme (GSS) for students applying for diploma and taught master's programmes.

For applicants from:
All countries in Africa

Eligibility
The GSS is needs based and provides funding for UK, EU and overseas students. This scheme is aimed at supplementing applicants who already have some form of funding secured and need a bit more to cover all the costs at LSE. If there is a greater need, and you submit a personal statement with your Graduate Financial Support Application, you will be considered for other LSE scholarships  which can offer a higher level of funding.

The value of awards ranges from £5,000 to £15,000, depending on financial need.

LSE Access to Education Graduate Scholarships 

LSE has significantly increased its funding for scholarships for asylum seekers and refugees, in response to the ongoing crisis across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. 

For applicants from:
All countries in Africa

Eligibility
Students who have an offer of a place to study at the School and have the following classification will be considered for this scholarship:

  • an asylum seeker;
  • or a refugee;
  • or a person with humanitarian protection. 

Scholarships are based on financial need, and are designed to help with the tuition fees and living costs.

LSE Master’s Awards

LSE Master’s Awards (LMAs) are part of LSE’s portfolio of funding for taught master’s students. The primary scheme for these students is the Graduate Support Scheme (GSS), which is designed to supplement other funding secured by a candidate (by way of savings, loans and external scholarships).

All countries in Africa

Eligibility
Preference is given to those from low and middle income countries, particularly if loans are not available or if those countries are under-represented in other award schemes administered by the School.

Awards can range in value from £5,000 to a full award.

Standard Bank Africa Chairman's Scholarship

LSE is pleased to confirm three Standard Bank Africa Chairman’s Scholarships for the 2022/23 session.

For applicants from:
Applicants must be graduate students who reside in or are citizens of one of Standard Bank ’s African operating countries.

Eligibility

The scholarships are for offer holders on the following LSE master's programmes:

Each scholarship will provide the cost of full tuition fees for the eligible programmes and provide a maintenance stipend of £21,000 for living costs.

Funding from LSE for research programmes

LSE PhD Studentships on 'Analysing and Challenging Inequalities'

For applicants from:
All countries in Africa

For 2019 entry, LSE offered a minimum of three new prestigious LSE PhD Studentships for PhD study in any Department whose research addresses ‘Analysing and Challenging Inequalities’.

Topics may cover any aspect of economic, social, cultural and political inequality, in any part of the world, addressing whether, why and how such inequalities are intensifying. Students may propose to use quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods.

Funding deadline for LSE & III Analysing and Challenging Inequalities PhD  Studentships for 2022 entry: 14 January 2022 (closed for 2022).

LSE PhD Studentships

For 2022 entry, LSE will be offering approximately 80 studentships to new PhD students in the form of LSE PhD Studentships, LSE DTP ESRC Studentships and London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) Studentships.

LSE PhD Studentships
LSE has its own prestigious PhD Studentships, which are available on all MRes/PhD and MPhil/PhD programmes, for UK, EU and overseas students.

LSE PhD Studentships are tenable for four years and cover full fees and an annual stipend of £18,000. They are available for UK, EU and international students undertaking research in any LSE discipline, with annual renewal subject to satisfactory academic performance.

ESRC funding
LSE has an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) and has ESRC studentships in a number of programmes for UK and EU students.

Studentships are tenable for three or four years, depending on the programme of study. They cover full fees (UK and EU level) and an annual stipend, which for 2018 entry was £16,777.

  • Deadline for programmes in the Departments of Economics and Geography and Environment for 2022 entry (including PhD Studentships and ESRC funding): 17 December 2021 (now closed for 2022/23).
  • Deadline for all other departments for 2022 entry: 14 January 2022 (now closed for 2022/23).

The Black Heart Scholars Programme

In 2013 The Black Heart Foundation launched The Black Heart Scholarship Programme, which awards bursaries to qualified candidates studying in the UK and US. The bursaries are open to all stages of education from preparatory education to post graduate schooling.

Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) provides the main UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. The CSC is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for International Development (DFID).

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening is the UK Government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British embassies and high commissions throughout the world.

Applications for Chevening Scholarships to study in the UK in 2022/2023 open on 2 August 2022.

Qalaa Holdings Foundation Scholarship

The Qalaa Holdings Scholarship Foundation (QHSF) was created in 2007, out of a strong will to contribute to national development through creating high caliber professionals to help enhance Egypt’s growth in all sectors. The Foundation is funded by an endowment from Qalaa Holdings to grant academic scholarships for talented and promising young Egyptian men and women to pursue master degrees abroad in all fields of study.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must be Egyptian nationals and reside in Egypt. Additional criteria can be found in the foundation’s website.

Deadline

QHSF accepts applications every year from January 15th to April 15th.
