Christos Stylianides, a former EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management and EU Ebola Coordinator, has been appointed a Visiting Professor in Practice at LSE’s Department of Health Policy.

Mr Stylianides will take up the position from Monday, 16th March. As Visiting Professor in Practice he will play an active part in the Department, delivering lectures to students and the public, participating in expert workshops as well as undertaking his own work.

Mr Styllianides said: “It is a real honour for me to be part of the LSE family. With my involvement in the LSE’s Department of Health Policy, I will do my best to pass valuable knowledge and experience to the new generation of public health practitioners and researchers. There is no doubt that the world needs new leaders in the field of crisis and disaster management.”

Professor Elias Mossialos, Head of Department and Director of LSE Health, said: “I am delighted that Mr Stylianides will be joining LSE’s Department of Health Policy as a Visiting Professor in Practice. Mr Stylianides will bring to bear his extensive experience gained from a career in politics, government, international and humanitarian affairs, to give lectures and contribute to teaching on global health and particularly international health policy.”

Mr Stylianides was European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management from 2014-2019 and EU Ebola Coordinator from 2014-2016. He assumed these roles having previously served twice as the Government Spokesperson of the Republic of Cyprus.

As EU Ebola Coordinator Mr. Stylianides played a key role in the international efforts to contain the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, coordinating all European policies and the EU’s and Member States’ responsible services. He was one of the first EU officials to visit the affected areas in West Africa, at the peak of the outbreak, and used his office to raise global awareness about Ebola, as well as initiating the regional cooperation which was key to bring the Ebola outbreak under control.

As Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Mr. Stylianides greatly contributed to the EU’s role as a global “soft power” and was characterized as the “humanitarian face of Europe” across the globe. He took important initiatives and implemented policies to address humanitarian crises from across the globe, led the actions to strengthen the humanitarian-development nexus by establishing better connectivity between cross-sectoral efforts to meet the UN Sustainable and Development Goals, and promoted innovative instruments to respond to humanitarian crises, such as cash and voucher schemes and humanitarian aid to foster reconciliation in conflict areas.
