This year marks the 150th anniversary of the 1871 Paris Commune: an event that profoundly influenced the development of the left. What actually happened, how has it been remembered, and what are the lessons today?

Meet our speaker and chair

John Merriman is the Charles Seymour Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of Massacre: The Life and Death of the Paris Commune and a recipient of the American Historical Association’s award for a career of Distinguished Scholarship.

Robin Archer is the Director of the postgraduate programme in political sociology and the Director of the Ralph Miliband Programme at LSE.
