LSE students visit BCG X

Students learnt more the tech build and design unit of BCG.

One element of how the Data Science Institute (DSI) supports LSE students as they prepare for their careers post-graduation is by organising regular student field trips.

These visits to industry leaders increase students' knowledge and understanding of the career paths that could be followed in the fields of data and technology.

On Thursday 9 February 2023, BCG X generously hosted a group of around 20 students for one of these visits. BCG X is the tech build and design unit of Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Following a tour and an introduction to the key elements of BCG X's work, students learnt more about the ways in which they connect tech builders and designers with areas such as AI, sustainability, and more. Students then attended a demonstration in the state of the art BCG X 'Garage'. Gaining first-hand experience in this way is key for students as they plan their next steps. This was outlined by one LSE student, who said, "The Garage Demo was very interesting and led to many conversations about data ethics and the implications of creating products that process sensitive information."

Reflecting on the visit, Aaron Trevitt, Senior Learning & Development Specialist and LSE Alum, said: "It was a pleasure to host students from across LSE who are interested in a career within data science. This visit enabled us to show these students the different ways they can build their career and the different options, sectors and organisations they could explore (which go beyond the traditional tech firms). It was inspiring to host such an engaged group who were very curious and interested in our work at BCG X."

The visit concluded with a networking session which gave students an opportunity to ask further questions.

The DSI would like to thank BCG X for agreeing to host this visit.
