This event brings together leaders from academic units dedicated to women / gender, peace and security from Australia (Monash), Ghana (KAIPTC), Norway (PRIO), the UK (LSE) and USA (Georgetown).
About the speakers
Nana Bemma Nti is the Faculty Coordinator at the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC). She previously worked on the pilot project that established the Women, Peace and Security Institute and facilitated the development of the gender academic programmes at KAIPTC. Before joining KAIPTC, Nana worked on different assignments with the International Labour Organization, as well as a National United Nations Volunteer with the United Nations Development Fund for Women and in family businesses. Her research covers complex emergencies, human security and women’s stories within these fields.
Christine Chinkin is founding Director of the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at LSE and emerita Professor of International Law.
Jeni Klugman is Managing Director at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, and a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government’s Women in Public Policy Program at Harvard University. Previous positions include Director of Gender and Development at the World Bank, and director and lead author of three global Human Development Reports published by the UNDP. She sits on several boards and panels, including for the World Economic Forum and the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Australian National University and postgraduate degrees in both Law and Development Economics from the University of Oxford where she was a Rhodes Scholar.
Jacqui True is Professor and Director of Monash University’s Centre for Gender, Peace and Security (Monash GPS) in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University, Australia. She is also an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and a Global Fellow, Peace Research Institute (PRIO), Oslo. Her current research is focused on understanding the political economy of post-conflict violence against women and the patterns of systemic sexual and gender-based violence in Asia Pacific conflict-affected countries. Recent publications include The Political Economy of Violence Against Women (Oxford University Press, 2012), and Scandalous Economics: The Politics of Gender and Financial Crises (New York: Oxford University Press, 2016) edited with Aida Hozić. She is a co-editor with Sara Davies of the Oxford Handbook on Women, Peace and Security (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2018).
Torunn L Tryggestad is Director of the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security. She is a leading expert on women, peace and security, in particular in relation to the UN peacebuilding and peace operations institutions and implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. In February 2017 the UN Secretary General appointed Tryggestad to join the Advisory Group of the UN Peacebuilding Fund. She has extensive experience from teaching and training and provision of policy advice to relevant Norwegian ministries, the Armed Forces and the Justice Sector. In recent years she has also been centrally involved in the conduction of the High-Level Seminars on Gender and Inclusive Mediation Processes, together with the UN Department of Political Affairs and the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI). Tryggestad was one of the principal authors of the first Norwegian National Action Plan on the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (2006).
