Healing minds and honouring roots on world mental health day

When: Friday, 10 October 2025, 7-9pm

Room: LSE, Marshall Building, MAR.1.08

Format: Hybrid

To mark World Mental Health Day, the LSE Centre for Women, Peace and Security is hosting an event with EmpoweredMindOrg in collaboration with the UN Women’s Peace & Humanitarian Fund.

The impact of conflict, online harms, and gender-based violence are adding to the mental health pressures affecting many within our diverse communities. This is particularly affecting young people as they navigate the challenges around education, employment, and family life, they now often find themselves with extra layers of uncertainty, anxiety, and instability.

This event showcases the response of a London-based organisation to the mental health challenges facing a community affected by war, displacement, and trauma. EmpoweredMindOrg promotes mental health awareness, resilience, and community wellbeing in the UK and in Afghanistan. Founder and author Sara Nazim is a mental health advocate with a background in Psychology and Clinical neuroscience. She will talk about her work and the importance of prioritising mental health in peace and security contexts.

Additionally, the programme will feature other professionals sharing creative expressions around the importance of healing, identity, and resilience. The event will then move into a Q&A and open discussion session, and close with a live poetry reading.

The discussion will be chaired by Professor Joanna Lewis, Director of the WPS Centre.
