The History of The Hub

The Hub’s research includes 38 projects under six research themes. It worked in seven focus countries and 17 other location.

The Gender, Justice and Security Hub is an interdisciplinary, transnational research network working with civil society, practitioners, governments and international organisations to advance gender justice and inclusive peace. The Hub is led by an Executive Group of leading global scholars on gender justice, guided by a set of core feminist research ethics and includes over 40 partner organisations, 38 research projects and 150 researchers around the world.

The Hub’s research addresses some of the world’s most urgent injustices. Conflict and gender-based violence have devastating, long-term consequences on individuals, families and communities. They also severely hamper the successful delivery of development goals internationally. Through the creation of new knowledge and networks, the Hub is amplifying the voices of women and marginalised groups and promoting reforms that affect local and global policy changes. The Hub brings together partners and researchers from multiple disciplines and practices to advance the delivery of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality; SDG 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions; and the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.

The Hub’s research includes 38 projects under six research themes: Transformation and Empowerment, Livelihood, Land and Rights, Migration and Displacement, Masculinities and Sexualities, Law and Policy Frameworks, and Methodological Innovation. These projects work in seven focus countries: Afghanistan, Colombia, Kurdistan-Iraq, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, and Uganda – as well as 17 additional countries across Africa, South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The Hub’s transnational, interdisciplinary, and multi-partner research approach recognises the variety of gender insecurities and injustices and is motivated by a commitment to holistic gender justice and sustainable peace.

The Hub has produced over 220 publications and outputs including academic journal articles, books, reports, policy briefs, blogs, book chapters, films, poems, podcasts, and art exhibitions. The Hub has also hosted five Global Conventions in Sri Lanka (2020), two online (both in 2021), Northern Ireland and England (2022) and Colombia (2023) where Hub members from around the world gathered to share cutting-edge research, engage with key actors in civil society, academia, and policy and law making, and work collaboratively to advance the Hub’s collective goals.

The Gender, Justice and Security Hub is one of twelve interdisciplinary research Hubs funded by UK Research and Innovation through the Global Challenges Research Fund.
