LSE's approach to widening participation
Our strategic approach to widening access to LSE is shaped by LSE's Access and Participation Plan, which is a condition of our registration with the Office for Students. It sets out objectives and targets, with specific intervention and evaluation commitments we have made to achieve them.
The Widening Participation team delivers a mix of long-term programmes, shorter events and school partnership activities tailored to specific student groups who are under-represented at LSE or in the wider university sector. All of our work is underpinned by evidence and sector research, and has an ongoing evaluation plan to understand our impact and promote continuous improvement.
Working with academic departments
We use an evidence-informed approach to to maximise the impact of our activities in achieving our widening access aims and targets, and the resources available to us.
We work with colleagues across Recruitment and Admissions and the School to identify key stages throughout the admissions journey where we can support prospective students, applicants and offer holders from priority groups to overcome barriers to studying at LSE.
Through this work, we prioritise our engagement with academic departments based on where Widening Participation activities are likely to be most effective by building subject awareness and increasing applicant diversity.
A number of academic departments take part in our LSE Explore events to encourage progression into diverse subject areas, and our Pathways to Law and Pathways to Banking & Finance programmes to break down barriers to careers in these sectors.
Supporting students once at LSE
The Widening Participation Team's remit encompasses activities across pre-entry, access and the important transition to university. We work in partnership with other teams across LSE to ensure students receive support throughout their studies at LSE.
We provide specific support to care-experienced students across the student lifecycle to enable relevant students to access tailored advice, resources and information.
All academic departments are supported to provide tailored support to offer holders and students who are part of the LSE Navigate network. LSE Navigate is our pilot programme of tailored support for care-experienced students and contextual offer holders, in collaboration with the Student Communities Team in the Student Learning and Personal Development Division, LSE Careers and LSESU.
