LSE Insight: year 11

A virtual event to support year 11 students in preparing for higher education

LSE Insight is a brand new one-day online conference for year 11 students (and equivalent) from UK state schools. It aims to:

  • improve understanding of university
  • provide a taste of degree-level study
  • offer an insight into student life at LSE
  • increase confidence in planning next steps after year 11
  • showcase a range of exciting widening participation opportunities.

Participants will hear from current LSE students, world-leading academics, an LSE Admissions Specialist, and LSE’s Widening Participation team. There will be plenty of chances to ask questions too.

When and where does the event run?

The LSE Insight event will take place on Saturday 28 March 2026 via Zoom. It will run from approximately 10.30am to 3.00pm (exact times will be confirmed in early 2026).

What activities are included?

The day will feature a range of interactive sessions, including:

  •          Introduction to widening participation opportunities at LSE
  •          My journey to LSE: reflections from current students
  •          A day in the life of an LSE student
  •          LSE student Q&A panel
  •          Social sciences taster lecture (details to be confirmed)
  •          Preparing for options after sixth form / college
  •          Introduction to LSE admissions.

The final agenda will be shared with successful applicants ahead of the event.

Are there any costs involved?

LSE Insight is free to attend.

Who is eligible?

Essential criteria

Applicants should:

  •          currently be in year 11 (England and Wales), year 12 (Northern Ireland), or S4 (Scotland)
  •          have always attended a UK state-funded, non-fee-paying school.

Additional criteria

Applicants should also meet at least one of the following:

  •          be care-experienced. This means you have spent time living with foster carers under local authority care, in residential care (eg, a children's home), being looked after at home under a supervision order, or in kinship care with with friends or relatives (officially or informally)
  •          have been eligible for free school meals at any point during secondary school
  •          live in an area where fewer people go to university, as measured by TUNDRA quintile 1 or quintile 2. You cancheck your postcode on the Office for Students website.
  •          live in an area with high socioeconomic deprivation, as measured by IMD quintile 1 or quintile 2. You can check your postcode using the relevant links for:
  •  England 
  •  Northern Ireland
  •  Scotland
  •  Wales.

What training do LSE staff receive?

All staff and students involved in the sessions receive appropriate training before the event. Staff or students working directly and regularly with young people receive specific training on working with children, in line with our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy. They also undergo an appropriate level Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Cancellation policy

Please note that as a result of circumstances or events outside of our control (known as a Force Majeure event), which includes but is not limited to industrial action, official government advice, fire, flood or other environmental or physical damage to premises, we may need to cancel an event at short notice.

In the event of a cancellation, a change of venue or date, we will endeavour to notify attendees wherever possible through the contact details given at the time of booking. For the avoidance of doubt, the School will not be liable for any costs you may incur as a result of any cancellation, change of venue or date.
