Visiting Research Student (VRS) status allows research students from other academic institutions to spend up to one academic session (three terms/one academic year) in the Department of Management, LSE.

If you are interested in VRS look at the Department’s faculty research groups, and familiarise yourself with individual faculty members.
List of all our faculty and staff.

Research students interested in this scheme are invited to identify and contact Faculty directly about their area of research, and to ask if they will agree in principle to supervise them during their time at LSE.

All VRS must have the support of a Faculty member within the Department of Management before applying to the VRS programme.

Visiting Research Students can start their studies in either Michaelmas term, Lent term, or Summer term.

At the end of the visit, the Department of Management’s PhD committee will require a report or summary of the outputs.

If you have questions about the VRS in the Department of Management, speak with the PhD programme team or email for more information.

Teaching and learning in 2021

LSE is committed to offering you the best possible teaching and learning experience within the constraints of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Our expectation for the 2021-22 academic year is that all LSE students will be in London and studying on campus, where we will provide flexible teaching and learning which blends both in-person and online elements. This flexible approach has been informed by our student and academic community and builds upon the innovations and improvements we have put in place over the past year. If, due to events outside of our reasonable control, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, we have to make any changes to the delivery of the programme in the 2021/22 academic year, we will provide as much notice as is reasonably practicable by updating this page and sending an email to all offer holders/students.

For more information about LSE's teaching plans for 2021 and our Coronavirus FAQs for prospective students please visit our website.

Assessing your application

To apply as a visiting research student, you apply in the same way as for our MRes/PhD programmes, with the same entry criteria. However applicants to our visiting research programme do not need to submit GRE or GMAT scores. Read entry criteria for all PhD Management programmes.

We welcome applications for research programmes that complement the academic interests of members of staff at the School, and we recommend that you investigate staff research interests before applying.

We carefully consider each application on an individual basis, taking into account all the information presented on your application form.

The application process is similar to that of our research degrees. Submit an application via LSE’s Online Application System. As part of your application, you will need to provide the following:

  • Academic achievement (including existing and pending qualifications).
  • CV.
  • References.
  • GRE/GMAT score (if applicable).
  • Outline research proposal.
  • Statement of academic purpose.
  • Sample of written work.

Applications are managed by the School’s Graduate Admissions Office. Find further details on how to apply.

You may also have to provide evidence of your English proficiency, although you do not need to provide this at the time of your application to LSE. See our English language requirements.

Competition for places at the School is high. This means that even if you meet our minimum entry requirement, this does not guarantee you an offer of admission.
