The MSc Data Science provides training in data science methods, with a focus on statistical perspectives. You will receive a thorough grounding in theory, much of it at a high mathematical level, as well as gain practical skills of applied data science, enabling you to apply advanced methods of data science and statistics to investigate real world questions.
The MSc Health Data Science is a programme designed to equip future health data analysts with the skills they need to interpret, analyse, assess, and evaluate health interventions, services, programmes, and policies. This is a joint programme with the LSE’s Department of Health Policy.
The MSc Financial Statistics at LSE equips you with a solid statistical foundation while developing valuable skills in both finance and data science, enabling you to carry out sophisticated financial data modelling and analysis. The programme blends rigorous theoretical training with practical applications, helping you to understand, interpret, and model complex financial phenomena using modern analytical tools. Taught by academics engaged in cutting-edge research, you will gain exposure to the latest developments in financial statistics and econometrics, preparing you for a range of careers in finance, data science, and quantitative analysis. You may also be interested in the 12-month research stream, MSc Financial Statistics (Research), which replaces one unit of optional taught courses with a dissertation module.
The MSc Quantitative Methods for Risk Management (formerly known as MSc Risk and Stochastics) offers in-depth instruction in probabilistic, statistical, and computational methods to quantify risk arising from, but not limited to, economic, financial, and insurance applications. This programme is LSE’s timely response to industry’s strong demand in experts with quantitative expertise in risk management, finance, insurance, and their interface.
MSc Statistics provides an excellent grounding for employment in the private or public sectors in Statistics, related quantitative fields or for academic research. The proof of the growing need for statistical modelling in many fields is the very strong career opportunities for our MSc graduates. Focusing on statistical methodology and its interface with economics, finance and social science, the MSc has an emphasis on the most successful statistical methods as well as cutting-edge new developments offering hands-on experience in real data analysis using R and Python programming environments.
The Social Statistics stream has been merged with the core Statistics stream. While the separate stream designation has been removed, we want to assure potential applicants that all courses previously offered to the Social Statistics stream remain available. If you're interested in the subject matter of social statistics, please apply directly to the MSc Statistics programme. To help guide your course selection and maintain specialised study, we're creating different tracks within the Statistics stream, including a dedicated Social Statistics track, which will provide a structured path for students keen on the applications of statistics within social science contexts. You may also be interested in the 12-month research stream, MSc Statistics (Research), which replaces one unit of optional taught courses with a dissertation module.
The ESRC 1+3 Studentship enables students to study for an MSc, followed by a PhD in the Department of Statistics. The funding is available on the MSc Data Science, MSc Statistics (Research) and MSc Financial Statistics (Research) programmes, and is open to students of all nationalities.
If you would like to be considered, you should submit an application for the relevant MSc programme, including a research proposal for the PhD element.
LSE’s online certificate courses designed by Department of Statistics faculty provide the expert knowledge and skills to enhance your career. Courses take place over 8 weeks and provide the flexibility for professionals looking to upskill for success.
