Theme: Why Social Policy?
Cars whiz by a stalled windmill in this long exposure. Despite calls to Build Back Better after Covid-19, policymakers are witnessing a return to normal, as fossil fuels dominate city streets while renewables are held back. When the Toronto Windmill was built in 2002 it symbolized progress towards a cleaner future, but it remains just a symbol. No subsequent windmills were developed, and it often fails to even run. As a policymaker I hope to help initiate change– a goal which brought me to LSE. The piece is antithetical to early pandemic photos of empty streets and cleaner skies.
Theme: Why Social Policy?
I see social policy as a catalyst to realize the inherent dignity that each of holds as a member of the human race. When designed and implemented appropriately, social policy can reign in the unbridled privilege that exists in many parts of society and shackles the most vulnerable ones among us. As a South Asian woman of colour, for me that has everything to do with exercising my agency, claiming public spaces, and having safe and dignified mobility. The more I am able to do that, the more my passion grows to work toward the same freedom for the communities I hail from.
