Animals and AI
As the use of artificial intelligence rapidly expands, its implications for non‑human animals are becoming increasingly significant. From farming and aquaculture to wildlife management, AI systems are already shaping how animals are monitored, managed and treated - often without explicit consideration of their sentience or welfare.
This priority area examines both the risks and opportunities that AI technologies present for other animals. We work to identify where emerging technologies may harm animal welfare, as well as where they may offer new ways to improve care, oversight and protection. Through research and engagement with key industries, policymakers and practitioners, we aim to ensure that AI technologies work with, rather than against, the interests of non‑human animals.
