Julia Wojtkowski
Master of Public Administration Double Degree (Columbia) Class of 2027

Name: Julia Wojtkowski
Programme and year: MPA Double Degree (LSE–Columbia University), Class of 2027
Nationality: American-Polish
One of my biggest takeaways has been the importance of connecting theory to practice, and understanding how institutional design and governance structures shape real-world policy outcomes.
Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the MPA double degree programme at SPP?
My background bridges public service, policy, and the arts. I’ve worked in both fintech and at the Polish Consulate in New York City (my hometown) - experiences that exposed me to both the potential and the limitations of policy implementation. I chose the MPA double degree because I wanted to deepen my analytical and policy design skills while gaining a truly global perspective through studying in two distinct policy environments: one close to home and one far away, yet both major cities on the global stage.
What are the highlights from Welcome and your first few weeks?
A highlight was definitely meeting such a diverse and driven group of peers: people who bring perspectives from all over the world and from sectors I’d never imagined. The sense of community formed so quickly, which made the transition to LSE especially exciting.
What have been some of your takeaways from your studies so far?
One of my biggest takeaways has been the importance of connecting theory to practice, and understanding how institutional design and governance structures shape real-world policy outcomes. I hope to apply these insights toward building more effective public–private collaborations, particularly in areas like digital governance and financial inclusion, where I’ve previously seen critical gaps.
What are you most looking forward to?
I think I’m most excited for my Capstone project next year and have a chance to apply everything I’ve learned to a concrete policy challenge in partnership with an organization.
What are you hoping to achieve/what are your main objectives whilst you are at LSE SPP?
My goal is to strengthen both my quantitative policy analysis skills and my leadership toolkit.
What is the best thing about being an SPP student?
Without question, it’s the people. The SPP student community is inspiring and uplifting, especially with the mix of cohorts.
Who would you recommend the programme to?
I would recommend this programme to anyone who wants to make a tangible impact and who values learning from a truly international cohort. It’s for those who want to turn ambitious or unconventional ideas into real, lasting change.
What advice would you give to anyone who is considering studying the MPA double degree?
Be open to the intellectual and cultural differences between the two institutions. Reflecting on my own experience, I’m excited for both my years at LSE and Columbia but for distinctly different reasons that, together, create a uniquely transformative journey. Don’t hesitate to reach out to alumni or current students; their perspectives can really help you tailor your goals.
Do you have any advice for applicants on the admissions process?
Show genuine curiosity about the policy problems that matter to you. The Statement of Academic Purpose isn’t just about achievements, it’s about demonstrating a clear sense of purpose and how this degree fits into your path.
What is your favourite place in London?
I don’t think I’ve found one yet, but I’m enjoying the process of discovery and getting a little lost along the way.
Can you describe your SPP experience so far in 3 words?
Challenging. Collaborative. Transformative.
