MPA in Data Science for Public Policy (MPA DSPP) Class of 2027

Name: Anirudh Prasadh
Programme: MPA in Data Science for Public Policy, Class of 2027
Nationality: Indian
"Policy decisions are only as strong as the data behind them, and learning when and how to use that data is becoming essential.
Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the MPA DSPP programme at SPP?
I began my career as a Chemical Process Engineer in India after graduating from The University of Manchester in 2011. Two years later, I made a conscious transition into the social sector, where I have spent more than a decade working as a monitoring and evaluation specialist with not-for-profit organisations. I have held several roles, including founding my own firm focused on data and tech solutions for the social sector. Most recently, I was Director of Monitoring, Evaluation and Technology at Leadership for Equity in India, working with Government Education Bodies.
Over the last few years, I felt the need for formal training, as much of my journey had been self-taught. I wanted a programme that combined public policy with data analysis, and this search led me to the MPA DSPP. I also wanted a structure that suited mid-career professionals, which made the programme an ideal fit.
How do you think the combination of studying Data Science with public policy will prepare you for your future career goals?
As data becomes more abundant, policy making will increasingly require a nuanced understanding of how and when to use data effectively. I felt this gap in my previous role, where certain questions required skills I didn’t yet have. This programme’s blend of technical learning and real-world application in the second year is unique, and I believe it will prepare me well for future roles.
What are the highlights from Welcome and your first few weeks?
The Pre-Sessional Coding and Mathematics Bootcamp was a great start and helped me connect with classmates. The energy on campus during the first weeks reinforced my decision to return to study mid-career. Meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures, and learning from them, has been a highlight.
What have been some of your takeaways from your studies so far? How are you hoping to apply these to your career/next steps?
Applying new concepts to my past work helps me understand them deeply and see what I might have done differently. All courses encourage critical thinking and clear articulation of ideas, which makes learning more meaningful. Group discussions also provide helpful context and reinforce the theories taught. Being inquisitive and collaborating with others are habits I hope to carry into my future work.
What are you most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to the Year 2 capstone project and the chance to collaborate with classmates to apply the skills we have gained.
What are you hoping to achieve whilst at LSE SPP?
My aim is to gain the technical skills I set out to develop and make the most of the opportunities available at LSE, including events, seminars and wider learning experiences.
What is the best thing about being an SPP student?
It’s the people. The department is welcoming and supportive, helping you stay confident and feel part of a community. It makes a big difference in day-to-day student life.
Who would you recommend the programme to?
Anyone interested in a public policy career with a strong data science focus. If you want something different from a traditional MPA and have an analytical mindset, this programme is worth considering.
What advice would you give to anyone who is considering studying the MPA DSPP?
Reach out to current students and alumni with your questions, but do your research first. Explore all the information available on LSE’s website. And importantly, don’t underestimate yourself or your achievements.
What are your hopes or plans for your future after graduation?
My plans are still evolving, and I expect them to change as I move through the programme. I will be looking for roles that build on my previous experience, including evaluation, programme audits and work with governments.
Can you describe your SPP experience so far in 3 words?
Refreshing, collaborative, engaging
