Lula, the man, the myth and a dream of Latin America

The LSE School of Public Policy welcomed Richard Lapper to the Old Theatre last week for a timely discussion on the life and legacy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Drawing on his latest book, Lula! The Man, the Myth and a Dream of Latin America, Lapper explored Lula’s remarkable political journey, from his roots in São Paulo’s labour movement to his return to the Brazilian presidency in 2022. The discussion highlighted the scale of Lula’s influence, not only within Brazil but across Latin America and the wider global stage.
The session examined the complexities of Lula’s leadership, including the balance between social ambition and economic reality, as well as the challenges of governing in a deeply polarised political environment. It also reflected on his role in shaping debates around development, democracy and environmental policy.
Chaired by Professor Vanessa Rubio-Márquez, the event brought together expert insight and practical experience, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the political and economic forces shaping the region today.
Events like this highlight the School of Public Policy’s commitment to connecting academic perspectives with real world policy discussions, giving students and audiences the opportunity to engage directly with leading voices in global affairs.
