Former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin delivers the School of Public Policy’s 2025 Annual Lecture

The School of Public Policy welcomed Sanna Marin, former Prime Minister of Finland, to deliver its 2025 Annual Lecture on Tuesday 11 November. Speaking to a full audience in the Sheikh Zayed Theatre, Marin joined Dean Andrés Velasco for an in-depth conversation exploring leadership, geopolitical change, and the themes of her new book, Hope in Action: A Memoir About the Courage to Lead.
Drawing on her time as Finland’s longest-serving female Prime Minister and leader of a government composed entirely of women, Marin reflected on the responsibilities of public leadership during periods of uncertainty. She discussed the importance of courage in decision making, the value of international cooperation, and the role of principled leadership in addressing global challenges.
The conversation ranged from international affairs and climate action to gender equality and the impact of emerging technologies on governance. Marin offered candid insights into how political institutions can adapt to rapid change while maintaining public trust and creating opportunities for future generations.
An engaging question and answer session followed, with students, faculty, and guests raising thoughtful questions on collaboration, security, and the future of democratic leadership.
Dean Andrés Velasco, who chaired the discussion, emphasised the importance of bringing global leaders to LSE to share practical perspectives that enrich public policy education and debate.
The School of Public Policy was delighted to host Sanna Marin for an inspiring evening of discussion and reflection!
