Dean Andrés Velasco appointed to the Group of Thirty

The School of Public Policy is delighted to share that Dean Andrés Velasco has been appointed to the Group of Thirty (G30), an independent global body bringing together leading figures from the worlds of economics, finance, and academia.
Founded in 1978, the G30 fosters deeper understanding of global economic and financial challenges and the international implications of policy decisions. Its membership includes central bank governors, senior public and private sector leaders, and distinguished academics, all participating in a personal capacity. Dean Velasco joins a cohort of global experts whose collective experience shapes international economic debate and practice.
A respected policymaker, academic, and former Chilean Minister of Finance, Andrés Velasco has built a distinguished career at the intersection of economic policy and global development. His leadership in establishing a sovereign wealth fund during Chile’s copper boom earned international recognition for responsible and forward-looking economic management. Before joining LSE, he held senior academic posts at Columbia University and Harvard Kennedy School, and his research continues to influence thinking on macroeconomic policy in emerging markets.
The appointment has been warmly welcomed by G30 leadership. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Chair of the Board of Trustees, noted Andrés’ “extraordinary record of policy leadership and academic expertise,” while G30 Chair Raghuram Rajan highlighted the value of his “ministerial experience and policy expertise in fiscal and macroeconomic issues, international finance, and economic development.”
Reflecting on the appointment, Andrés shared how honoured he feels to join the Group and contribute to its work.
The School of Public Policy congratulates Dean Velasco on this significant recognition of his expertise and global impact. His appointment underscores the School’s commitment to fostering rigorous, internationally focused public policy thinking and engaging with the world’s leading institutions and practitioners.
