Why did Colombia and Chile experience bouts of social unrest and street violence recently? What are the roots of this discontent and what can be done about it?

Join us for this panel with Associate Professor Ana Arjona and Dr Marcela Ríos to discuss these issues.

This is the first panel of the Social Unrest in Colombia and Chile: causes and cures event. To find out about the second panel click here.

Meet our speakers and chair

Ana Arjona (@anamarjona) is Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University. She was the Director of the Center for the Study of Security and Drugs at Los Andes University in Bogota, Colombia in 2018-2019, where she is now Associate Researcher. She obtained her PhD in political science from Yale University (with distinction), and has been a Fellow at the Earth Institute at Columbia University and the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Her research investigates the dynamics and legacies of organized violence, especially civil wars and organized crime, local governance, state building, and the foundations of political order.

Marcela Ríos (@mriost) is the assistant resident representative in Chile for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She received master’s and doctoral degrees in political science from the University of Wisconsin (United States); a master’s degree from the Latin American School for Social Sciences (FLACSO) (Mexico); and her undergraduate degree in sociology and Latin American studies from York University (Canada). Her areas of interest include Latin American comparative politics and gender studies.

Mauricio Cárdenas (@MauricioCard) is a Visiting Professor at Columbia University SIPA and a Visiting Senior Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University SIPA, where he leads research focused on energy and climate policy in Latin America. Dr. Cárdenas is a recognized expert on Latin America and an economist with vast academic and policymaking experience. As Colombia’s finance minister between 2012 and 2018 he handled the oil shock (which caused a 40% reduction in Colombia’s exports), implementing a successful adjustment program that preserved high investment rates and sharp reductions in poverty and inequality. Prior to the shock he had led a fiscal reform that cut payroll taxes, triggering an unprecedented increase in formal jobs. In addition to Finance, has been a minister in four other portfolios: Economic Development (Industry and Housing), Transport, Planning, Mines and Energy.

Andrés Velasco (@AndresVelasco) is Professor of Public Policy and Dean of the School of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Gareth Jones is Director of the Latin America and Caribbean Centre at LSE. He is Professor of Urban Geography in the Department of Geography and Environment at LSE and an Associate Member of the International Inequalities Institute.
