LSE Philosophy Professor Alex Voorhoeve and co-authors have published their new paper discussing The Ethics of Relying on Research Participants’ Altruism.

In the new article published in the Journal of Moral Philosophy, Alex Voorhoeve and co-authors examine the ethics of relying on people's altruism to enroll them in risky research. They argue that altruistic enrolment can contribute to the enrollee's wellbeing and agency, both for adults who have the capacity to consent and even for some people with cognitive limitations who are unable to consent on their own behalf. They conclude that it can be permissible to enroll altruists in riskier research than would be permissible for non-altruists.
