About
Tori Shucheng Yang is a Sociology Fellow at LSE. Her research examines the reproduction and transformation of gender and sexual orders in the context of international migration. Her dissertation studies queer migration from China to North America with a focus on the reconfiguration of intersectional identities. Her research has appeared in Social Problems, Gender & Society, and the 60th Anniversary Issue of International Migration Review. She received her PhD in Sociology from the University of British Columbia.
Research
Tori’s research examines how gender and sexual orders are reworked across social contexts. She uses migration as a strategic empirical site to study how migrants negotiate intersectional identities across borders and how these changing identities, in turn, shape their transnational trajectories. Beyond migration, her research examines how disruptions in intimate relationships can sustain or contest heteronormativity.
Her current projects examine friendship among queer migrants, migration among Chinese people with disabilities, and the production of ambiguity around sexual harm and suspended moral careers.
Teaching
Tori teaches on SO201 Advanced Social Theory and SO458 Gendering, Identities, Difference.
