Joan’s research examines how the introduction of artificial intelligence into electronic health records systems is impacting care in the NHS. Prior to LSE, Joan received her master’s in Sociology at Columbia University, where she researched situated expertise amongst Black data scientists, and her bachelor’s in Global Liberal Studies at New York University.

Research
Joan is interested in the social impacts of artificial intelligence and technology, inequalities and activism in health and social care, and futurist perspectives in sociology.
Working Thesis Title: A Matter of Record: Race/ism and the social construction of artificial intelligence in electronic health record systems
