About

Dr Campbell Brown is an associate professor in philosophy. His research is mostly on the normative side of philosophy and overlapping areas of philosophy and economics.

He likes to use formal or mathematical methods to address normative questions – sometimes called "formal ethics". The main benefit of this approach, in his view, is that it provides precise representations of normative structures, enabling the identification of those which are consistent and coherent.

Originally from New Zealand, he did his PhD at the Australian National University and held positions in the USA and Scotland before joining LSE. When not philosophising, he enjoys music-making, sometimes with The Critique of Pure Rhythm, dog-walking, and video-gaming, among other hobbies.

Research Interests

  • Normative ethics, especially consequentialism.
  • Theories of social welfare, especially prioritarianism, egalitarianism, sufficientism.
