Dr Bryan Cheang is the Director and Fellow of the LSE Hayek Program at STICERD. He is also a Teaching Fellow at the School of Public Policy and the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method.
He received his PhD in Political Economy from King's College London, where he is also a Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Governance and Society. His research interests lie at the intersection of philosophy, politics, and economics, with a particular focus on comparative political economy, the ethics of market exchange, the role of the state in development, the challenges of effective industrial policy, and Asian politics.
He has published numerous articles and books, including Economic Liberalism and the Developmental State: Hong Kong and Singapore’s Post-War Development (2022, Palgrave), Institutions and Economic Development (2023, Springer) and Southeast Asia’s Development: Towards Liberal Individualism and Inclusive Governance (2025, Oxford Press). He is currently working on a handbook on liberal political economy with Cambridge University Press and a critique of mission-oriented industrial strategy.
Additionally, he is also the Principal Investigator of a new grant awarded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, based at LSE and King's, titled "Liberal Political Economy in Asia-Pacific".
