LSE academic appointed to United Nations Panel on AI

Professor Sonia Livingstone has been appointed to the UN’s Independent International Scientific Panel on AI.
The panel will serve as the first global scientific body on Artificial Intelligence (AI), bringing together 40 leading experts to assess how AI is transforming our lives. It will advance scientific understanding and ensure that international deliberations are informed by the best available evidence.
As outlined by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Panel will be the “first global, fully independent scientific body dedicated to helping close the AI knowledge gap and assess the real impacts of AI across economies and societies.”
Professor Livingstone, who is based in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE and is a Faculty Affiliate in the School’s Data Science Institute (DSI) is a leading expert on children's rights, safety, and opportunities in the digital world.
She has advised the UK government, European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, OECD, ITU and UNICEF, among others, on children’s internet safety and rights in the digital environment.
She is also Director of Digital Futures for Children, a joint LSE and 5Rights Foundation research centre and recently directed the Digital Futures Commission (with the 5Rights Foundation) and the Global Kids Online project (with UNICEF).
Commenting on the appointment, Professor Livingstone said: “I’m honoured and delighted that my expertise as a social scientist researching children’s opportunities, literacies, risks and rights in a digital world is included in this important panel. The panel will be addressing urgent questions that matter globally, and I look forward to the deliberations.”
