“We are proud to be part of LSE, an institution that ranks #6 in the world for social sciences and management (QS World University Rankings 2025)”

As a research-led department of management ranking #6 in our field, our MRes/PhD and MPhil/PhD programmes are an integral part of the academic environment at LSE, producing doctoral graduates of the highest quality.

You will work closely with international and world-class faculty as part of a vibrant community of doctoral students, all of whom are pursuing varied research in different fields of management.

All programmes include a comprehensive methodological training, seminars in specific research areas, and you will also have the opportunity to specialise in a designated field.

Research degree programme FAQs

As the deadline for applications of Wednesday 14 January 2026 has now passed, applications for the Department of Management PhD Programmes for 2026/27 entry are closed.

Interviews will be online and take place in February 2026. We plan to start making offers in March 2026.

Applicants should expect to receive invitations to interview from early February. If you used a Gmail account for your application, please check your spam regularly and we recommend you add the domain @lse.ac.uk to your ‘Safe Senders’ or ‘Never Block’ list. If you are not selected for an interview this year, you should hear from us around the same time that your application has been rejected.

The competition for places on the Department of Management PhD programme is intense. Our selection process starts with a detailed review of your application by our Programme Directors and Faculty Groups to select candidates for interview. All interviews are online and last around one hour.

Each year, we award full tuition coverage and an annual stipend for five years to at least one exceptional candidate per programme, regardless of their nationality or citizenship.

If you have any queries, you can contact the PhD programme team.

A statement about the ACE PGR Initiative

In line with the LSE’s principle to Advance Higher Education’s Race Equality Charter, the Department of Management is participating in the Aiming for a College Education Programme – Postgraduate Research Programmes (ACE - PGR). It is an initiative to widen access and participation for UK BAME applicants and students who are underrepresented in PGR programmes across LSE. This scheme will provide support to BAME candidates at three key stages of the PGR lifecycle: (1) Access, (2) Student Success, and (3) Career Progression.
