Professor Michael Barzelay elected as Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration

I’m delighted to have been selected as a new Fellow—for me it’s a momentous development

Professor Michael Barzelay

We are delighted to share that Professor Michael Barzelay, Professor of Public Management, has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA), an independent institution based in Washington, D.C.

NAPA’s elected Fellows include prominent scholars, public administrators, former cabinet officers, members of Congress, governors, mayors and state legislators, and civil society leaders.  NAPA provides thought leadership across the field of public administration through the working groups of elected fellows and its research staff.  It also acts on requests for assistance from the US Congress, federal agencies, and state, local, and international public bodies, much like the national academies for science, engineering, and medicine do in their fields.

Welcoming the new Fellows, James-Christian Blockwood, President & CEO of NAPA, said the new Fellows “have already had hugely impactful careers in academia public service and will help us in our ongoing mission to strengthen communities and guide government into a brighter future at the local, state and federal levels.” Induction of the new Fellows will occur during NAPA’s 2025 National Conference in November.

“I’m delighted to have been selected as a new Fellow—for me it’s a momentous development”, Professor Barzelay said in response to being elected. “I know from the selection process that my work in public management over the past several years was important to the case for my nomination, selection, and election. That work wouldn’t have been possible without everything that the LSE has offered to me as an academic home — for 30 years and counting.”

Looking ahead to working with NAPA, Professor Barzelay commented, “Being part of NAPA will allow for engaging with other academics and leading practitioners to approach challenges facing public administration in the US, perhaps for as long as a generation to come.”
