Georgia Meyer Accepted into Complexity Global School for Emerging Political Economies

The international element of this programme is very exciting. I'm looking forward to connecting with researchers from across the world in a city as iconic as Bogotá.

Georgia Meyer, PhD Candidate

Congratulations to Georgia Meyer, PhD Candidate in Information Systems and Innovation, who has been accepted into the 2025 Complexity Global School for Emerging Political Economies.

The 2025 Complexity Global School for Emerging Political Economies is a collaboration between the Santa Fe Institute in the USA, and la Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, where it will be hosted this year.

The intensive, 12-day programme, which will welcome around 60 students from across the globe, aims to provide deep exposure to the latest complex methods, models, and frameworks for thinking about economics and governance.

We spoke to Georgia about being accepted into the programme:

“I came across the programme early in my PhD studies,” Georgia said, “I first applied in 2024, but didn’t get it. Being accepted this year is a thrill! My application drew on an old project for a localised cultural funding network - the spirit of which lives on in my PhD research.

“Over the past couple years of my PhD research, I've been able to talk to a number of people who have been thinking about the not-at-all-simple notions of: 'decentralisation' (and collaboration) - in this case via 'personal' data. My application focused on these themes, and how complex systems approaches and methods could help think through what kinds of socioeconomic relations an inverted personal data economy could materialise.”

Commenting on how the programme will enhance her research career, Georgia said, “Participating in this programme will give me a good grounding to interface well with researchers with varied skills, conceptual backgrounds and ideas for conservation and change. Long term I'd like to join inter-disciplinary / transdisciplinary research teams with a strong emphasis on communication and engagement with the various publics they serve.”

The international element of this programme is very exciting. I'm looking forward to connecting with researchers from across the world in a city as iconic as Bogotá.”

Regarding this year’s programme curriculum, Georgia highlighted the topics on network analysis and agent-based modelling applied to the intersections between topics like belief dynamics, democracy, polarisation, and the environment as particularly of interest.

The programme will run from Monday 28 July to Friday 8 August 2025 and be attended by select early-career, deep thinkers who are either academics from a wide array of disciplines, or practitioners from the private sector, government, or other civil society organisations.
