The Department of Management is delighted to share that Professor Chrisanthi Avgerou, Professor of Information Systems, has been elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in the Management and Business Studies section.
The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences, which aims to mobilise these disciplines to ‘understand the world and shape a brighter future’. Scholars elected as Fellows of the Academy have 'attained distinction in any of the branches of study which it is the object of the Academy to promote'.
"I'm truly honoured to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy,” commented Professor Avgerou. “This recognition means a great deal to me personally, and it is also an acknowledgment of the Information Systems field - which, until now, has had only one International Fellow of the British Academy: Wanda Orlikowski.”
Welcoming the new Fellows, President of the British Academy, Professor Susan J. Smith PBA, stated: “With specialisms ranging from the neuroscience of memory to the power of music and the structural causes of poverty, [the Fellows] represent the very best of the humanities and social sciences. They bring years of experience, evidence-based arguments and innovative thinking to the profound challenges of our age (…) It is a privilege to extend my warmest congratulations to them all.”
Professor Avgerou’s research focuses on the socio-technical process of information technology (IT) innovation and its socio-economic impacts across diverse contexts. She has studied the use of IT and its related organisational changes in various countries and developed a contextual perspective that emphasises the role of national institutions, rationalities, and ideologies in shaping IT innovation and its outcomes.
In recognition of her contributions to the Information Systems field, she was named an Association of Information Systems (AIS) Fellow in 1999 and received the AIS LEO Award for Exceptional Lifetime Achievement in Information Systems in 2023.
